      On Nov 28, Global Compact Network China - a local network of UN Global Compact - held its 2012 Annual Conference in Beijing titled “Leadership and Implementation- Sustainable Development of Chinese Companies in the New Context”. The Conference is aimed to implement and put into practice the spirit of ecological development put forward by the 18th National Congress of CPC, summarize and exchange good practices on CSR and sustainable development, discuss and analyze trend and challenges of corporate sustainable development in new context, explore new strategies for corporate sustainable development. As an important item on the agenda, 2012 Global Compact China Best Practices were released in the conference, covering areas of social responsibility management, environmental protection, protection of employees’ rights and compliance. 30 best practices from over 20 companies including Sinopec, Development Bank of China, Elion Resource Group, Nestlé (China) were honored as 2012 Global Compact China Best Practices. The Conference convened over 300 attendees including leaders from both Chinese and international companies and representatives from relevant industrial associations, research institutions, UN agencies in China and foreign embassies in China.
      Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-general of United Nations, sent a message to the Conference, saying that “I am encouraged to see ever more Chinese companies embracing the Global Compact principles”. Mr. Wang Zhongyu, Vice Chairman of 10th National Committee of the CPPCC, Chairman of China Enterprise Confederation, pointed out in his address that Global Compact Network China has done some very fruitful work in raising Chinese companies’ awareness on CSR, enhancing their ability to practice CSR and strengthening the communication and cooperation between Chinese companies and international community, particularly in promoting Chinese companies to practice CSR and pursue green and sustainable development based on Chinese context and realities of Chinese companies. Its work has been highly recognized by Chinese companies and UN Global Compact. Mr. Georg Kell, Executive Director of UN Global Compact delivered a keynote speech saying “I commend the Global Compact Network China for its unremitting efforts to advance corporate sustainability practices within China, as well as Chinese corporations for their leadership in integrating the Global Compact’s ten principles into their strategies and operations.” Mr. Shao Ning, Vice Chairman of SASAC, emphasized in his opening remarks that truthfully fulfilling social responsibility has become a common expectation and requirement for companies from the society as well as an effective approach of managing companies in strategic way and enhancing competitiveness. Mr. Fu Chengyu, member of UN Global Compact Board, Chairman of Board of Global Compact Network China and Chairman of Sinopec made a keynote speech titled “Road of Sustainable Development for Members of Global Compact Network China in New Era”. He pointed out that “Chinese companies who are committed to sustainable development should take active actions in exploring the road of sustainable development through innovation and cooperation and should become the frontrunners and make good contributions to the harmonious development of society, human beings as well as development of ecological civilization.
The Conference was chaired by Mr. Li Decheng, member of UN Global Compact Board and Executive vice Chairman and Director-general of China Enterprise Confederation. Business leaders from China National Building Materials Group, State Grid, China Huarong Asset Management CO.,LTD, Elion Resource Group, BASF(China) and Nestlé(China) shared their experience and practices in pursuing sustainable development.
UN Global Compact is currently the largest, most high-level and influential CSR and sustainable development initiative, serving as an important platform for learning, sharing good practices on sustainable development and CSR for companies. Over 8700 companies and institutions from more than 130 countries have signed up for it.
      Global Compact Network China was inaugurated with the authorization of UN Global Compact on Nov 28th 2011 with Sinopec and China Enterprise Confederation as the leading initiators. It strives to promote Global Compact Ten Principles to drive sustainable development. It has delivered training to over 700 companies on relevant knowledge, provided assistance or guidance to over 100 companies in submitting COPs to UN Global Compact, participated in the report releasing of over 20 companies including State Grid, Sinopec and China Machinery Industry Group.
Especially worth-mentioning is that it organized around 100 business representatives from over 60 Chinese companies to attend the Rio+20 Corporate Sustainability Forum, demonstrating and sharing best practices and achievements of Chinese companies. Through one year’s hard work, over 50 new members have joined Global Compact, making the total number of Chinese members of Global Compact reach 299, an increase of 23% compared to when it was just established.
It has become a diversified and inclusive self-discipline organization whose members representing various sectors, regions, and types of ownership. It is committed to promote sustainable development based on its own conditions.
